Curls Need Love Too

For some reason I really thought I’d covered my curly hair routine from beginning to end, but I’m still getting DMs about what do I do to my hair. Apparently I haven’t covered my curly hair routine since my Gowdy Girls days, so I should definitely give you a breakdown.

Before I get into it, if you happened to find me by means other than Instagram, check out the reel here for a visual to accompany my process. Also, my hair sessions always coincide with shower time. I rarely wash my hair outside of a shower because it’s just easiest to do it in the shower.

Step 1: First thing I like to do is gather all of my tools. My hair products and tools must all be in place. I hate getting caught in a step and realizing I don’t have what I need.

Products

  • Shampoo - Carol’s Daughter Wash Day Delight

  • Deep Conditioner - Garnier Fructis 1 Minute Hair Mask

  • Styler- The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam

  • Edge control - Got 2 B

Tools:

  • 2 butterfly hair clips

  • Denman Brush

  • Wide tooth comb or EZ Detandgler

  • Devacurl towel

Step 2: Shampoo with whatever currently tickles my fancy. I’m not married to any one shampoo.

Step 3: Deep condition...kinda. I use a 1 minute hair mask by Garnier Fructis. I don’t have time for a 30 minute to 1 hour deep conditioning session. I find that any conditioner with glycerin as the 3rd ingredient listed works for me. Don’t ask me why, but I have experimented with this theory and it hasn’t failed me. It usually sits in my hair for around 10 minutes.

Step 4: Detangle while the deep conditioner is in. I like to give the conditioner a good 2-3 minutes to sit in my hair before I start detangling. Gives my hair time to soften up.

Step 5:  Allow my hair to sit in a Deva-towel for a few minutes. This is when I put on my serums, moisturizer, and lotion.

Step 6: Separate my hair into 2-4 sections and apply The Doux to each section.

Step 7: Style my hair. This is where I go through and add additional product to touch (my hair feels a certain way when it has enough product in it) and use a denman brush for detangling and definition. I brush though the entire section for detangling and then smaller sections for definition.

Step 8:  Air dry. I rarely diffuse because I feel like my hair feels dryer sooner; it shortens the life of my wash and go.

Step 9: Optional. Separate curls for more volume. I don’t always do this. And I don’t always do this with oil. Just depends on how me or my curls feel.

And that’s it! Feel free to ask questions, but again, check out the video on Instagram here.
